When soundproofing a door, the idea is to keep the visual appeal of the entryway intact while stopping “sound leaks” from one side of the door to the other. Whether you’re soundproofing an exterior door to keep noise inside your home down or you’re soundproofing interior doors to keep loud noises out of the home office, the tools you’ll need are essentially the same. Doors create chasms through which all noise will leak unless the right door or doorway hardware are used.
For some homeowners, the answer will be a DIY method of sealing off entryways while for others the answer will be to fit entryways with soundproof doors. In either instance, soundproof hardware around the door itself will help keep sound leaks to a minimum.
Outfitting any door with soundproof hardware
Doors are unfortunately great sound leakers. For privacy in your home office or the privacy of people in other rooms of your house, try outfitting your door with soundproof weather stripping tape all the way around the inside of the doorframe. This means when you’re done adding weatherstripping, it should be on both sides and the top of the frame where the door closes into it.
Finally, you’ll add a soundproof foot seal to the bottom of the door, which keeps sound from spilling out through any open space that used to be at the door’s base. While these seals will not make any average door entirely soundproof, it will definitely help to make things quieter on both sides of the offending entryway.
Knowing how to soundproof a door is not difficult, but it will require removing the door from its hinges to be done correctly so that seals don’t bunch up in the frame upon closing the door. Likewise, adding the seal at the base of the door is much more easily done with the door off its hinges and the door lying flat on a saw horse, for example.
Picking a soundproof door for your home office or any other room of your house
If you have a home office where you host business calls, Skype sessions, or other kinds of conference calls, keeping the sound of the herd away from you is essential. While outfitting your door with soundproof weatherstripping or other seals will help, the only way around this issue entirely is with a truly soundproof door.
ETO Doors offers dozens of doors in a variety of wood species for your soundproof door needs. In addition, ETO’s inventory of sound rated doors is also available with fire rating as well. No matter what your needs are for your home office door, we can help you find what you need. Matching interior doors are also available at very reasonable rates so that all the doors in your home are soundproof, matching, and purchased at the same time so they’ll all look the same when installed and moving forward.
And finally, if you wish for one of your doors to not be soundproof, such as a baby’s nursery, for example, you can choose a door that is made from the same wood material with a lower or nonexistent sound rating. In this way, your interior will match and be safe as well.
